Reading Readiness- Reading In Kindergarten

It is a famous saying that, “Books are Man’s best friend” and we need to make our kids friendly with the books. Therefore reading books to kids is very essential.  It can help children develop their interest in many new things. Books can help them learn and grow in a better way and become better individuals. By reading to kids, they can learn about different cultures, nations,behavior, and can work on their vocabulary, language and much more. It helps in developing their intellectual skills and concentration.

Developing the habit of reading books to kids at a young age is a little difficult task; as their attention span lasts only for 10-15 minutes, so to make sure we need to spend a dedicated amount of time with them to develop the habit of reading in them. In order to get the children to develop a liking for reading, here’s how we can begin:

*Reading and storytelling with babies and children promotes brain development and imagination, develops language and emotions, and strengthens relationships.

*Sometimes we can read. And sometimes we can look at picture books, sing songs or tell stories from our culture.

*Babies and young children often enjoy books, songs and stories with good rhyme, rhythm and repetition.

*Anytime is a good time for a book or story! So we should try to share at least one book or story each day.

*We have to make sure the books are colorful with lots of pictures in them, as the pictures will interest the kids.

* We have to take out 10-15 minutes every day to read and make it a daily ritual.Most importantly, we have to make sure to keep our mobile away while doing this as they will develop interest only if shown interest.It’s pretty easy to develop a new habit in children, especially one such as reading from an early age so that they are acquainted to books.

*The parent-child bond-Having time to read with a parent isn’t just about the activity of reading. Even a few minutes of reading together gives both, you and your child a chance to slow down, connect with each other, and share and enjoybenefits for kids’ cognitive development, especially when they’re younger. Reading to young children is proven to improve cognitive skills and help along the process of cognitive development. Cognitive development is the emergence of the ability to think and understand; it’s “the construction of thought processes, including remembering, problem solving, and decision-making, from childhood through adolescence to adulthood”
